What is desired in a man is kindness, and a poor man is better than a liar.
Proverbs 19:22 (NKJV)
In your opinion, which is the most desirable character trait in a human being? Which quality defines the ideal man? The answer will vary from one individual to the next, depending on personal experience, cultural beliefs, religious convictions, societal norms, and so on.
What is Desired in a Man is Kindness
King Solomon, the famed wisest man to have lived, had his say on what defines the ideal man. He wrote, “What is desired in a man is kindness, and a poor man is better than a liar.” (Proverbs 19:22). Depending on the Bible version you are using, the term ‘kindness’ can be rendered as “devotion, loyalty, kindness, unfailing love, steadfast love, fidelity, and so on.”
According to Benson’s Commentary, “there is no virtue a man ought to be so desirous of as benignity, or a generous, charitable spirit, as it is the greatest ornament of human nature and the strongest bond of human society, which if anyone wants, however rich he may be, yet he is despised.”
What Defines an Ideal Man?
Character, especially our treatment of others, is what defines us. Our actions and words towards others are enough to tell humanity who we are. The number of academic degrees we have, the positions we hold at work and in society, the salaries we earn, and the money in our bank accounts all mean nothing if we treat other human beings unkindly.
It is commendable to amass wealth and enjoy the trappings of power and all the good money can bring, but of greater importance for a human being is to love one’s neighbor, both genuinely and practically. That is what defines the ideal man, especially one who has met and accepted Jesus as his personal Savior and Lord.
