He asked him, saying, “What do you want Me to do for you?”
Luke 18:40-41 (NKJV)
Something remarkable occurred in Jericho’s busy streets. Despite being blind, Bartimaeus perceived Jesus’ presence as he drew near and exclaimed, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus questioned Bartimaeus.
State Your Need
This question may seem superfluous at first look. Jesus undoubtedly understood Bartimaeus’s needs. However, the answer to this query exposes a more personal and profound side of Jesus’ relationship with us. He asks to speak with us one-on-one, to share our hopes and dreams, and to explain his religion.
It was more than just a desire for actual sight when Bartimaeus said, “Lord, that I may receive my sight.” It was an expression of his hope and faith in Jesus’ ability to transform his life. He was expressing his faith in Jesus’ capacity to effect change rather than merely pleading for a miracle.
What Do You Want Me to Do for You?
Jesus desires that we speak up about our needs, hopes, and wishes. He longs for us to actively interact with Him in our connection. However, faith demands that we move in the direction of Jesus. Jesus sees us, pauses for us, hears our cries, and responds to us with kindness and love—no matter how unimportant we may feel.
How would we answer Jesus if He asked, “What do you want Me to do for you?” Are we prepared to be open and sincere about our wants and needs? Will we be willing to put our greatest desires in His hands, knowing that He has the ability to bring them to pass in ways we could never have imagined?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I want you to heal and bless me in all aspects of my life.
