What Does it Mean to Be Free?

Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.
Galatians 5:1 (NKJV)

In Galatians 5:1, the apostle Paul declares, “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free.” This statement encapsulates the essence of Christianity. Jesus offered us a route to freedom and new life by breaking the bonds of sin and death through His death and resurrection.

What is Liberty?

There are several facets to our freedom in Christ. First comes liberation from the debt of sin. We are freed from the shame and guilt of our previous transgressions as a result of Jesus’ death on the cross. Since His blood has covered our sins, we are now righteous in God’s eyes.

Christ also provides us with deliverance from the grip of sin. We are able to triumph over sin’s hold on our lives because of the Holy Spirit’s indwelling. We are free to follow God’s will and are no longer subject to our sinful nature.

What Does Mean to Be Free?

In Christ, true freedom also refers to being released from slavery and fear. We are safe in God’s love and acceptance, so we no longer need to live in fear of judgment or condemnation. With confidence, we can approach Him because we know that nothing can separate us from His love.

Let us cling firmly to His truth as we welcome the freedom we have in Christ and refuse to allow the bonds of sin and servitude to ensnare us once more. With the help of His Spirit, let us live as free children of God, walking in obedience, love, and service.
