What is Better than Life?

Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise You.
Psalms 63:3 (NKJV)

What can be better than life? David is in the jungle. He is isolated from Jerusalem’s house of worship as well as from security and comfort. But rather than giving up, he makes a strong, profound statement. “Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise You.”

God’s Lovingkindness

David is speaking from the bottom of his heart, not embellishing. He believes that God’s unwavering love is more significant than life itself. Knowing God and feeling His covenant love is far more important than anything else in life, including happiness, prosperity, health, and even survival.

Love like this never falters. It is not determined by our actions or the situation. The lovingkindness of God is enduring, devoted, and intimate. Nothing else will satisfy you after you have tasted it. God’s love is what you need all the time. The rest of life’s necessities will fall into place.

What is Better than Life?

It is this realization that makes David respond with praise, out of joy, not obligation. His heart is full, even in the wilderness, and his lips are overflowing. He has faith that as long as he has God, he has nothing to fear.

What is better than life? What do you value most? Does the love of God come first? Have there been times when His presence was more valuable than everything else for you? Like David, may your lips never run out of praise.

Prayer
Almighty God, thank You because Your love is better than life. Teach me to value You more than anything else. May Your unwavering love bring me great delight even during dry and exhausting times.
