You shall have no other gods before Me.
Exodus 20:3 (NKJV)
God lays down a fundamental principle regarding our connection with Him at the onset of the Ten Commandments: “You shall have no other gods before me” is extends an invitation to have a close, personal relationship with our Creator and to give Him first place in our lives.
This commandment was especially important in ancient Israel because neighboring nations worshipped other deities. Even though we might not worship idols made of wood or stone now, our idols can still be things like relationships, occupations, ambitions, and material belongings.
I Shall Be First in Your Life
This instruction pushes us to look inward. What is most important in our lives? Do we really put God first, or have we let other things take priority over our devotion? In addition to honoring God when we put Him first, we also discover direction and meaning in our lives.
We begin a transforming relationship with God when we make the commitment to have no other gods before Him. God then becomes our ultimate source of fulfillment, serenity, and strength. Let us make it our daily goal to prioritize Him in our lives, letting Him direct each choice we make.
What is God’s Place in Your Life?
Is there anything that you value more than your spiritual connection to God? Endeavour to begin each day with God. Take some time to read from the Bible or engage in prayer before starting your daily responsibilities.
Be in the company of believers who will inspire you to prioritize God in your life. Think about participating in a Bible study or small group where you can discuss your spiritual challenges and accomplishments. Always ask yourself, “What is God’s place in my life?”
