What is Your Life?

Daily Devotional – Tuesday, May 10, 2022
What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.
James 4:14 (NKJV)

I went to high school in a very cold environment. However, while I hated the cold, I loved the mist. I enjoyed watching the fog and the sun play hide-and-seek.

In the morning, the mist would dominate only for the sun to take over gradually. Conversely, the mist would progressively dissipate into nothingness.

Our lives are similar to mist, according to James. “What is your life?” He asks. To what can you compare your life? His answer is quite intriguing. “For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.” (James 4:14).

Living Responsibly

ames cautions against excluding God from our plans and arrogance. He observes that boasting about tomorrow is futile because the future is in the hands of God. We have virtually no control over our lives.

Like mist, we appear for a short while on earth and disappear as quickly as we had emerged. Mist may not have the same impact as rain, but it leaves moisture in its wake. Knowing this should feel us with the desire to live responsibly.

Living Joyfully and Purposefully

Mist lasts for a brief moment, but God has a purpose for it. While we are not sure how long we will live, we should invest endeavour to fill our years with joy, purpose and fulfilment.

In this fleeting life, before you transition into the new heaven and new earth, what impact do you have on those around you? How efficiently are you using the remaining time to add value to the physical, social and spiritual environment?

Prayer
Lord Jesus, in the brief moment I will be on earth, give me a sense of purpose and fulfil
ment.
