…what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness..?
2 Peter 3:11 (NKJV)
“A Christian should not behave like that.”
“You mean a Christian can be that cruel?”
“I thought he was a Christian.”
“As a Christian, how should you behave if you find yourself in such a situation?”
“What kind of person should a Christian be?”
How Different Should Your Character Be?
You must have come across these questions or their versions in your interactions with society. Perhaps the queries were directed at you. Maybe it was another professed follower of Christ. You may have found the interrogations hurtful. Alternatively, you took them as a turning point to change your conduct.
There is, nevertheless, one indisputable assumption in these statements. The call to follow Jesus comes with very high expectations of character transformation. There is no higher calling than to bear your cross and follow Jesus. Satan knows it. People around you are aware of the high moral standards by which they judge you.
Looking For and Hastening the Coming of the Day of God
Two millennia ago, Apostle Peter reminded believers of how dreadful the coming of Jesus would be for unbelievers. He then posed, “Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat?” (2 Peter 3:11-12).
According to Peter, those who look forward to the soon return of Jesus must lead holy and godly lives. They must allow the indescribable power of the gospel to refine their thoughts, motives, speech and actions. The only way to escape God (He is a consuming fire to sinners) is to allow Christ to dwell in us and produce fruits of righteousness.
What Manner of Person Ought You To Be?
You know Jesus is coming soon. The call to follow Him is a call for holiness and undivided commitment. What manner of person ought you to be? Are you the model Christian? By God’s grace, which areas of your life will you amend to conform to God’s will?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, as I look forward to the blessed hope of your second coming, I will lead a godly life, by Your grace.
