When Believers Rejoice Over Lost Souls

Daily Devotional – Saturday, February 19, 2022

Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

Luke 15:10 (NKJV)

When she conceived out of wedlock, Winnie stopped attending the church. She could not bear the shame. Her only connection to the church was a close friend, who also updated Winnie on what was happening in the church.

The soon-t0-be mother was hurt to know that she had become the subject of criticism and ridicule. Young people were warned not to follow Winnie’s example. She felt like the devil incarnate.

Religious Indifference and Neglect

However, condemnation did not pain her as much as indifference and neglect by her former church mates. No church leader or member had reached out to know her situation and persuade her to return to church. It was as if she had never attended that church.

Now you know why Winnie does not attend church. It reminds me of the Parable of the Lost Sheep in Luke 15. When the shepherd found the sheep that had wandered, he called his friends and neighbors together to celebrate.

There Will Be Joy in Heaven

Observe how Jesus concluded the parable, “I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance.” (Luke 15:7).

Now, let us look at the other side of the coin. What happens in heaven when a child of God leaves the fold and returns to a life of sin? Heaven is filled with sadness. Angels hung their harps, agonizing over the lost soul.

Believers Rejoicing Over Lost Souls

In contrast, we sit in small groups to gossip the brother or sister who no longer comes to church. His or her sin is the subject of sermons. Some holier-than-thou brethren shout, “I knew it. She was a hypocrite!”

What is our attitude towards those who have forsaken the path of righteousness? Are we guilty of rejoicing when souls get lost? Is there a former church member you need to persuade to return to God?

Lord Jesus, forgive for being indifferent to former church members. Lead me to a soul that needs a helping hand to return to Your fold.
