When God Cancels the Debt

Daily Devotional – Sunday, November 23, 2025
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.
Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV)

A man has fallen behind on their mortgage payments and finally receives a notice to appear before the bank. He walks in expecting stern words and the loss of their home. Instead, the bank representative calmly explains that someone has stepped in, cleared the entire debt, and asked for nothing in return. The shock, the relief, and the gratitude all rush in at once. That experience of receiving help you did nothing to earn reflects only a glimpse of the grace God freely gives.

Why Grace Still Amazes

Many of us live with a quiet pressure to perform as if life is a long list of boxes to check so we can feel worthy. We imagine that our effort could somehow earn God’s love. Grace interrupts that thinking. It tells us that our value does not come from flawless behavior. It comes from belonging to Christ. It reminds us that our best attempts still fall short and that God already knew that when He offered us His gift.

When God Cancels the Debt

Paul makes it clear that our salvation is entirely God’s doing. Grace is free to us, yet it came at the greatest cost because Jesus gave His life for us. Sacrifice speaks.

Today, let us embrace the comfort of grace. Let us release the need to impress God and receive the truth that He loves us fully. And as grace reshapes our hearts, let it overflow into kindness toward others.

Prayer
Dear God, thank You for Your undeserved gift of grace.
