When God Fights Your Battles

Daily Devotional – Monday, January 22, 2024
The LORD Himself goes before you and will be with you. He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid. Do not be discouraged.
Deuteronomy 31:8 (NIV)

Moses was a colossus of a leader. His boots were too big to fit any person among the Israelites. Joshua, Moses’s faithful lieutenant, understood who Moses was more than most people. How, then, did Joshua feel when God appointed him to replace Moses in leading the children of Jacob to the Promised Land?

The LORD Goes Before You

In his own right, Joshua was a legendary warrior, but he had a difficult mission ahead of him. To begin with, the group he was supposed to lead was disobedient. Second, Canaanite nations were strong and seasoned by combat. They were prepared to use their superior weaponry and chariots to protect their lands from Israel.

Thankfully, God never dispatches His workers without providing for their needs. In Deuteronomy 31:8, Moses assured Joshua, “The LORD Himself goes before you and will be with you. He will never leave you or forsake you. Do not be afraid. Do not be discouraged.” What a lovely pledge! Not only would God lead from the front, but He would also fight beside Joshua. Victory was assured.

When God Fights Your Battles

The God of Joshua is aware of the difficulties you are now encountering as you work toward achieving your life’s mission. Though your struggles are difficult, you cannot give in to fear. Be brave. God is ahead of you, fighting your battles. If you remain loyal, He will give you victory in temporal and spiritual matters.

Prayer
Almighty Father, I am grateful that you are fighting my battles and that I don’t have to live in fear.

Battles can represent internal struggles like doubt or fear. God’s “fighting” always manifests as with guidance, wisdom and strength to overcome these internal challenges.
