When God Whispers in a Still Small Voice

…and after the fire a still small voice.

1 Kings 19:12 (NKJV)

Elijah, the mighty prophet of God is in hiding. He is fleeing from Queen Jezebel, who has vowed to kill the servant of God. Ironically, the prophet has a short while before summoned fire from heaven in the presence of Baal’s prophet, to prove Jehovah is the only God.

God does not leave Elijah alone. The fallible man of God must learn yet another important lesson.

But the Lord Was Not in the Wind

God commands Elijah, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the LORD.” (1 Kings 19:11). The Lord wants to speak to Elijah and the seer expects a powerful manifestation of the Almighty, like the fire from heaven that burned the sacrifice of Mount Carmel.

Elijah is not ready for what happens next:

And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; 12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire…” (1 Kings 19:11-12).

A Still Small Voice

God is not in the strong wind, the earthquake or the fire. The Almighty avoids might manifestations of His power and instead speaks in “a still small voice.” (1 Kings 19:12). On hearing the Lord’s voice, Elijah walks to the entrance of the cave to listen to God.

Like Elijah, we often think material blessings are proof that God loves us while ignoring that being alive and healthy is a daily miracle. While waiting for mighty miracles from God, we fail to hear His voice through other people and daily events in our lives.

Not by Might nor by Power, but by My Spirit

In addition, we sometimes think well-funded and glamourous gospel campaigns will win many souls while neglecting the more effective pers0n-to-person evangelism. We want to reach souls in far-flung areas while our neighbours lack the essentials of life.

God often speaks to us in a still small voice. We must be careful not to miss His message in the ordinary things and activities of life. God reminds us that His work has a formula: “Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit.” (Zechariah 4:6).

Listen again. God may be speaking to you through channels that you least expect and which you may be ignoring.

Father, help me to discern and obey Your still small voice when You speak

Amen! We should give attention to the little things of life, little blessings, little providence , little favors and luck .. for they may be wrought by the might of God’s grace through His spirit.
