Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” Whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left.
Isaiah 30:21 (NKJV)
The people of Judah were worried about what was to come. Mighty enemies encircled them, and fear began to influence their actions. Rather than looking to the Lord for help, they were looking to Egypt, hoping that a political alliance would bring them the security they desired.
The Voice We Almost Ignore
We can hardly blame them. When life feels uncertain, we also look for something we can see, touch, and control. But God knew that what they were doing would not lead them to the goal they sought. In mercy, He promised to lead His people back the right way.
That promise speaks to a struggle we all know. We want God’s guidance, especially at a point where we face a decision. We pray for wisdom, we look for answers, and we carefully weigh our options. At the same time, though, we can be surprisingly attached to our plans. We sometimes ask God for direction when we really want Him to validate that our destination is the right one.
What makes this verse so encouraging is the picture it presents of God. He is friendly and interested. He is a shepherd watching over His flock. He guides us when we wander. When our minds are filled with doubt, He does not forsake us. His desire is not merely to provide information. He wants to lead us personally and faithfully.
When God’s Voice Interrupts Your Plans
Notice that the voice says, “This is the way, walk in it.” We often wish God would reveal the entire road ahead, complete with every turn and every detail. More often, He provides enough light for the next step. Then He asks us to trust Him with the step after that. Guidance and obedience are closely connected. We discover the path as we walk it with Him.
If you are in the middle of the unknown today, remember that God has not ceased to lead His people. He still speaks through His Word, moulds our hearts through His Spirit, and guides the one who seeks after Him. We do not need to know all about tomorrow. We only need to walk close to the One who already does.
Prayer
Almighty God, help me to be willing to follow You to wherever You lead and to trust You fully.
