But go, tell his disciples and Peter, He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.
Mark 16:7 (NIV)
Picture a man who makes a serious mistake at work, one that hurts trust and leaves them feeling ashamed. He sits quietly replaying everything, convinced he has ruined his future and cannot fix what went wrong.
Failure Meets Forgiveness
Peter lived through something similar between Thursday night and Sunday morning. After boldly promising loyalty, he denied Jesus three times, just as Jesus had said in Luke 22:62. When the rooster crowed, the weight of his failure overwhelmed him, and he wept in deep sorrow.
On Friday, Peter watched events unfold from a distance. Seeing Jesus condemned and crucified must have pierced him painfully. If denying Jesus broke his heart, witnessing the crucifixion must have crushed it.
Saturday offered no relief. Although the disciples rested because of the commandment, Peter’s conscience surely remained troubled. With Jesus gone, he may have wondered if returning to fishing was all that remained for him.
When Grace Calls Your Name
Sunday morning, however, changed everything. When the angel spoke to the women at the tomb, he told them to inform the disciples and intentionally mentioned Peter. That personal message showed Jesus had not cast Peter aside. He had forgiven him and was ready to restore him. Peter’s lowest point became the beginning of renewed purpose.
Every believer faces moments when guilt feels overwhelming. When we turn to God in sincere repentance, He restores us just as He restored Peter. Jesus knows us by name and invites us to rise again and return to His work.
Prayer
Lord, when my failures discourage me, remind me of Your grace shown in Peter’s restoration.
