Then, when Mary came where Jesus was and saw Him, she fell down at His feet, saying to Him, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.”
John 11:32 (NKJV)
Lazarus had been sick for some time, and Mary and Martha had already sent word to Jesus. They knew He cared. They believed He could help, but He did not come at once. The sickness worsened, and soon Lazarus was dead. When Jesus arrived at Bethany, four days had passed. The house was full of mourners, and everything seemed heavy. Mary did not hold back. She fell at His feet and said what had been sitting in her heart.
Seeing Beyond the Delay
Her words were honest. She believed Jesus could have changed things. At the same time, she felt the weight of what had already happened. To her, it seemed like the moment had passed. We all can identify with her feelings. When something important is delayed, you can feel like the chance is gone, and hope begins to slip.
Jesus saw more than what Mary could see. His delay was not because He did not care. He was working toward something greater than stopping the sickness. He was about to show that He has authority even over death. What looked like the end was not the end in His hands.
When It Feels Like God Missed the Moment
We can find ourselves in that same place. We pray, we wait, and when nothing changes, we start to wonder if God has come too late. It is easy to assume that silence means absence or that delay means nothing will happen.
Mary still came to Jesus with her questions. That matters. When you feel unsure or disappointed, do not stay away. Bring it to Him. Trust that His seeming delay does not mean He has forgotten you. What He is doing may be bigger than what you were asking for.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me to trust Your timing, believing You are always working for my good, even when I don’t understand how.
