When Love is Expressed Through Pain

Daily Devotional – Tuesday, August 10, 2021

As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten.

Revelation 3:19 (NKJV)

One of my former students is a valiant army officer. He once reminded me of a lashing I gave him in high school for some misdemeanor. We laughed about it, something we could not have done back then.

He then said, “Teacher, were it not for that thrashing, I would not be the person I am today.” I was speechless. Back then, he may have hated and cursed me. From hindsight, though, he now realized that I meant well.

Likewise, God is like a parent or teacher. In Revelation 3:19, Jesus tells the Laodicean Church, “As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten.” From verses 14-22, Christ strongly admonishes this lukewarm church.

However, our loving Lord reminds this church that His strictness and stern warnings demonstrate His immense love for them.  Solomon had this to say about God’s warning and rebukes to us when we rebel against Him:

My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD, Nor detest His correction; For whom the LORD loves He corrects, Just as a father the son in whom he delights (Proverbs 3:11-12, NKJV).

God uses parents, siblings, friends, workmates, fellow believers and church ministers to warn you against sin. Rebukes may also come through sermons, devotionals, gospel songs and so on.

Do not blame the channel through which the warning comes. Appreciate that the God who loves you so much is warning you. He means good for you. He wants to save you from sin, heartache, disease, breakups and death.

Father, thank you because you love me so much that you rebuke me when I go astray. I reject sin in all its forms.

Indeed it is love expressed. If man is not tamed, we are sin bound!

Sometimes we may ask God why me,passing through this temptation or the Other? Personally,I think,it might be a way of punishing us/reminding us we should go back to Him,or at least trust Him for the Providence.May,Our Continue rebuking me/us and shape me/us to become whole beings pleasing to His Eyes🙏,amen
