Though the Lord is exalted, he looks kindly on the lowly; though lofty, he sees them from afar.
Psalm 138:6 (NIV)
It is a common practice in many offices to host the boss in a special office, complete with assistants and security personnel. Lower-level employees rarely get to interact personally with the big man or woman. The ordinary worker cannot access the big office.
Lifted Eyes, Lowered Hearts
In contrast, God’s greatness does not create distance like earthly hierarchies do. He is very high up, but He is kind to those who are lowly. He doesn’t care about status. He pays attention to the humble heart, but he shuns the self-sufficient one.
Being humble is the first step to being a practical Christian. It means knowing that we need God when we make choices, have problems, or have big plans. We admit our weaknesses and ask for help. Being honest draws God’s loving gaze to our everyday lives as well.
When Majesty Draws Near
Pride, on the other hand, quietly builds walls. When we hold on to our strengths and successes, we miss out on the help we need. God is still mighty, but the proud feel like He is far away because they won’t bow. Being proud is choosing to be far away from God.
Consequently, position yourself in a manner that draws God to you. Let your guard down. Admit that you need God in your life. Walk humbly before Him in prayer, service, and your daily work. Believe that the Almighty God sees you, cares for you, and responds to your repentant heart. Let humility shape every relationship you enter into.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, teach me how to be genuinely humble so that I can be close to You every day.
