Evening and morning and at noon I will pray, and cry aloud, And He shall hear my voice.
Psalms 55:17 (NKJV)
David was familiar with danger from his childhood. Many were the times he had to flee and hide as enemies pursued him. One thing David learned through his troubles was the power of prayer. He knew that only complete dependence on God would save him from his foes.
In Psalm 55, enemies surround David. His closest friend betrays him. In this low moment, he says, “As for me, I call to God, and the Lord saves me.” (Psalm 55:16). He confesses that his salvation comes from God alone.
Prayer becomes a lifestyle for David. He asserts, “Evening and morning, and at noon, I will pray and cry aloud” (v. 17). Evening, morning, and noon signify the entire day. The servant of God does not cease to pray.
David prays when night falls. His voice ascends to God when he wakes up. As long as the day lasts, he does not cease to cry aloud to God. Prayer becomes a habit, a relationship of total dependence on God.
How fulfilling would our lives be if we made prayer a daily habit? What if we valued prayer the way we did breathing? Would our lives be the same if we treated every place as an altar for communicating with God?
Prayer is communicating with God as with a friend. When prayer becomes our lifestyle, dinner, breakfast, and lunch will become opportunities to unite our weaknesses with the power of the Almighty God.
When we infuse prayer with our existence, we can say with David, “…He shall hear my voice.” (v. 17).
Father, help me to make prayer my lifestyle.
