Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil.
Proverbs 3:7 (NIV)
A young driver thought he could outsmart the traffic signs on a mountain road. He ignored the warnings and took what he believed was a faster shortcut. Instead of saving time, he got stuck on a rough, unsafe path that could have easily led to disaster. His confidence in his own judgment nearly cost him dearly. Isn’t that how life often goes when we insist on doing things our way?
Wise in Your Own Eyes?
Solomon, a man known for his God-given wisdom, is urging his son to build life on God’s truth. The preceding verses remind us to trust in God fully and to rely on individual wisdom. Verse 7 emphasizes that we cannot be smarter than God. The message is a subtle warning against pride, which eventually leads to destruction.
Instead, Solomon gives us two simple but powerful instructions. First, fear the Lord. That doesn’t mean being terrified, but choosing to honor and respect God in every part of life, recognizing that His perspective is greater than ours. Second, turn away from evil. Real wisdom shows up in how we live, by choosing what pleases God and walking away from what pulls us down.
When Self-Reliance Becomes a Trap
We live in a culture that constantly tells us to “trust yourself” and “follow your heart.” While that sounds appealing, it often leaves us confused or broken. God calls us to lean on His wisdom instead of our limited insight. Whether it is in making financial decisions, choosing friends, or handling family struggles, are you leaning on your own understanding or seeking God’s direction?
Prayer
Almighty God, help me not to trust in my own wisdom. Teach me to honor You, to turn from evil, and to depend on Your guidance every day.
