When Shame Meets Mercy

Daily Devotional – Friday, October 24, 2025
He answered, ‘I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.’
Genesis 3:10 (NIV)

Have you ever avoided someone because you knew you had disappointed them? That is exactly what happened in Eden. Adam and Eve once enjoyed perfect fellowship with God, but after disobeying Him, they suddenly realized their nakedness.

The Love that Finds You

Overwhelmed by guilt and shame, they tried to cover themselves with fig leaves. When they heard God walking in the garden, instead of running to meet Him as they usually did, they ran to hide among the trees.

It is not hard to understand why. Sin always drives us to hide. When we make mistakes or fall short, we often withdraw from prayer, church, or the Word of God. Deep down, we fear that God is angry and ready to punish us.

Thankfully, God is the One who comes looking for us. He did not abandon Adam. Instead, He called out, “Where are you?” The same loving voice still seeks us today, not to condemn, but to restore.

When Shame Meets Mercy

Imagine a child who breaks a precious vase and runs to hide behind the curtains, trembling. Instead of shouting in anger, the parent gently lifts the curtain, kneels, and says, “Come out, I still love you.” That is what God does for us. He hates the sin, but He loves the sinner.

So, why are you hiding from God? Guilt cannot heal you, but His grace can. Come out of hiding. Let God remove the burden of shame and clothe you with His righteousness. He has already taken the first step. It is your turn to walk toward Him and start again.

Prayer
Father, I no longer want to hide. Take my guilt and shame away, and cover me with Your righteousness.
