Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.
Galatians 5:1 (NKJV)
Following the abolition of the slave trade, many slaveowners were forced to release their bondservants. While many slaves embraced and rejoiced in their newly-acquired freedom, some returned to their masters, fearing to embrace a life of freedom.
Christ Has Made Us Free
The Apostle Paul alludes to a similar scenario in Galatians 5:1. Just as in physical slavery, a person whom Christ has set free can opt to return to slavery. When we accept Jesus as Lord and Saviour, He sets us free from bondage to sin.
We no longer walk in the flesh or exhibit the works of darkness. We serve not our sinful thoughts, passions, and emotions. Evil habits that controlled us before are now powerless. Our hearts are filled with the joy of freedom.
That said, if we are not careful, we risk falling back into our old habits and getting entangled again in the yoke of bondage. Satan is ever on the lookout to bring back his former slaves into their dungeons.
When Freed Slaves Return to Bondage
It makes sense, therefore, to heed Paul’s warning, “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free.” This statement implies a deliberate effort to follow Jesus fully. If we are not vigilant, we will lose our freedom in Christ.
Which attitudes and sinful tendencies did Jesus emancipate you from? Are there areas in your life that you have not fully surrendered to Jesus? If you have returned to bondage, invite Jesus into your life and experience the freedom and joy that only He can give you.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, whenever I get entangled again with the yoke of bondage, please lead me back to You.
