With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments!
Psalms 119:10 (NKJV)
Robert Robinson (1735-1790) wrote the renowned song, “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing”.
His widowed mother could not pay for Robinson’s schooling. He worked as an apprentice, for some time. Later, he joined a gang of ill-behaved youths.
One day, they heckled Methodist preacher, George Whitefield. Incidentally, Robinson heard the message that would lead him to Christ, on this day. He became a Methodist preacher himself.
His song reveals a man who felt immensely indebted to the grace of God for his salvation. However, he fears being drawn away from the God he loves so much.
In stanza 3, Robinson makes this profound statement, “Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it / Prone to leave the God I love.” Like Robinson, we are predisposed to wander from God because of our sinful human nature.
There will be times when you will feel like giving up on your faith. Satan will place traps and roadblocks on your path. You will be insulted, ridiculed, criticized unfairly, betrayed and persecuted.
Satan will try to convince you that the pasture is greener on the side of sin and rebellion. You will see nonbelievers or uncommitted Christians prospering and wonder why you should remain faithful to God.
Your safety is in these lyrics, “Here’s my heart, O take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above.”
Submit yourself daily to the God “who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy” (Jude 1:24).
Father, with my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments! (Psalms 119:10)
