When We Stop Pretending Before God

Daily Devotional – Thursday, May 7, 2026
The LORD is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth.
Psalms 145:18 (NKJV)

A little boy ran through the living room and accidentally broke a glass vase. When his mother asked what happened, he quickly blamed the cat and ran off to his room. The longer he was there, the heavier he felt inside. Later that evening he tiptoed back gently, told the truth and apologised. His mother did not shout at him. She hugged him instead. The honesty restored the closeness his fear had interrupted.

Why God Values Honest Prayer

Today’s guiding text reminds us that God values that kind of honesty. David says the Lord is near to those who call on Him “in truth”. Many people pray, but not everyone prays truthfully. Occasionally we hide behind formal words while our hearts remain distant. We tell God we are fine even when we are discouraged, angry, confused, or afraid. Yet God has never asked us to pretend before Him.

Throughout Scripture, people spoke to God with remarkable honesty. Some cried openly. Some confessed sin, some expressed disappointment, and some admitted fear. God listened because they came sincerely. He is not impressed by polished religious language or spiritual performance. He desires genuine hearts. Prayer is not about sounding impressive. It is about bringing your real self before a loving and attentive Father who already knows you completely.

When We Stop Pretending Before God

When David says the Lord is “near”, he is speaking about more than distance. He means that God is attentive, involved, and approachable. The person who speaks honestly with God is never ignored. If you are carrying failure, uncertainty, loneliness, or worry, the Lord invites you to come to Him in sincerity. Honest prayer often becomes the doorway to deeper fellowship with God.

Do not wait until you have perfect words before you pray. Come to God honestly today. Share with Him what’s really happening inside your heart. Talk to Him about how you’re feeling, your fears, your struggles, your gratitude, and your hopes. The Lord is close to those who seek Him with sincerity. You may find that the moment you stop pretending before God is when you begin to know His closeness more deeply.

Prayer
Lord, teach me to come before You honestly and sincerely, trusting that You are near and ready to listen.
