Daily Devotional – Wednesday, July 22, 2026
From the end of the earth, I will cry to You when my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
Psalm 61:2 (NKJV)
John and his five-year-old daughter, Hannah, were coming from the grocery store. The excited girl wanted to help carry the groceries home. She began with a confident gait, two heavy bags in her tiny hands. The weight came too soon. A bag fell; fruit spilt onto the pavement, and a carton of eggs cracked open. Hannah stood quietly, holding back tears as her father picked up the bags and carried them the rest of the way. That afternoon, she learned she did not have to be strong enough to receive her father’s help.
What to Do When Your Heart Is Overwhelmed
David reached a similar point in his own life. Far from home, full of trouble, he confessed his heart was overburdened. He didn’t pray for God to make him stronger. He prayed, “Lead me to the rock that is higher than I” (Psalm 61:2). David knew safety was not where he could reach. He could not overcome his situation through determination alone. He needed God to lead him where he could never go by himself.
Many of us carry life the way Hannah carried those grocery bags. We shoulder worries about our families, finances, health, or future until they become too heavy to bear. We convince ourselves that strong Christians should always cope without struggling. Yet Psalm 61 reminds us that faith is not pretending we are strong. Faith is admitting that we need the Lord more than we need our own strength.
When You Can’t Carry the Load Anymore
John did not think less of his daughter because she could not carry the load. He simply stepped in and carried what she could not. Our heavenly Father responds with even greater compassion. He is not disappointed when we come to Him exhausted. He welcomes honest prayers from weary hearts and faithfully leads His children to the security only He can provide.
If your heart feels weary today, stop measuring your strength and start trusting God’s. Bring every burden to Him without shame or fear. The Lord never asked you to become the rock. He simply invites you to trust Him enough to let Him lead you there.
Prayer
Father, thank You that I do not have to face life’s burdens in my own strength. When my heart is weary, teach me to lean on You and lead me to the Rock that is higher than I. Help me to rest in the assurance of Your unfailing care.
