When Your God-given Wealth Pulls You Away From Him

Daily Devotional – Wednesday, September 1, 2021

Then you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth.’ Deuteronomy 8:17 (NKJV)

Do you remember Satan telling God, concerning Job, “But now, stretch out Your hand and touch all that he has, and he will surely curse You to Your face!” (Job 1:11).

This reminds us of the gradual decline in the number of believers in developed nations, many of which were established on Christian principles. Numerous church buildings are now entertainment joints. Atheism is taking root.

Why does the spirituality of a nation appear to decline as the country becomes wealthier?

In Deuteronomy 8, God warned His people not to forget their history and His role in it. He recounted their desert wanderings and the lessons it had taught them. He pointed to the abundance that waited for them in Canaan.

God was concerned that some Israelites would forget Him once they became rich and comfortable. There was a possibility they would say, “My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth.” (Deuteronomy 8:17).

That is why He reminded them, “And you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth.” (Deuteronomy 8:18).

We, too, risk falling into the same trap. How many times do we pray earnestly to God for something, but when we receive it, we behave as if we were solely responsible for the results?

Are your achievements pulling you closer to God or away from Him? Do you think you need to thank God more for your progress in life so far?

Father, always remind me that all my achievements are a result of Your favour and grace.

Psalms 103
By David.
1 Praise the LORD, my soul. All that is within me, praise his holy name.

2 Praise the LORD, my soul, and do not forget all his benefits;

3 who forgives all your sins; who heals all your diseases;

4 who redeems your life from destruction; who crowns you with loving kindness and tender mercies;

5 who satisfies your desire with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

A good challenge to us. Are the blessings given to us drawing us more to God or away from Him. Thankyou Elder for this message.
