Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor, but he was the son of a harlot…
Judges 11:1 (NKJV)
The late renowned novelist and screenwriter, Scott Fitzgerald, wrote, “Show me a hero and I’ll write you a tragedy.”
We love heroes. They live in our books. They are on television. Some live in our societies and families. We look up to them for inspiration, especially when faced with negative circumstances.
According to Fitzgerald, for one to become a hero, they must undergo ‘tragedy’ or tough times. Heroes are born in hard times and under tough conditions. If there is no battle, there won’t be a crown.
Take, the example, of Jephthah, who is listed among the heroes of faith. “… the time would fail me to tell of Gideon and Barak and Samson and Jephthah….” Hebrews 11:32 (NKJV).
Judges introduces Jephthah this way, “Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor, but he was the son of a harlot; and Gilead begot Jephthah (Judges 11:1, NKJV).
Note the contrast. Jephthah was a mighty warrior but His mother was a prostitute. Jephthah’s embarrassing background did not stop him from achieving his purpose in life.
It is easy to give reasons and excuses. It is challenging to face the tough times. Eventually, however, we are judged by what we achieve. Those we call heroes won their battles, despite the negativity around them.
What obstacles are preventing you from reaching your destiny? Trust God. Do your best. On the other side of your battle lies your destiny and a crown. Be a Jephthah, today.
Father, hard times make heroes. I will not complain or give excuses. I will work diligently, by your grace.
Amen this is so inspiring…
May God grant us the strength to manouvre the tragedies
Amen, Hesbon. That’s my prayer, too.
