Who Do You Say I Am?

He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
Matthew 16:15 (NKJV)

Jesus asked his disciples a pivotal question during his ministry: “But who do you say that I am?” This question is still relevant to modern believers. It necessitates an individual reaction, one that exposes the fundamental elements of our knowledge and faith.

Who is Jesus to You?

Jesus wanted his disciples to understand the profound truth of his identity. This is why He asked this question. He was viewed differently by society. Some considered Him a revolutionary, some a prophet, and still others believed He was a historical great. Jesus persisted nonetheless, saying, “But who do you say that I am?”

Acting on impulse but under the influence of the Spirit, Peter stated with confidence, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16). In this straightforward but significant statement, Peter embraced Jesus as the promised Savior—the real Son of God—rather than just a teacher or prophet.

Who Do You Say I Am?

Jesus asks each of us the same question today. It is not enough to be aware of what other people think of Him or to grasp his teachings just hazily. He longs for a face-to-face interaction—a profession of faith acknowledging Him as our Lord and Savior.

“Who do you say I am?” The answer to Jesus’ question changes our life by bringing our beliefs, words, and deeds into line with the real Jesus. O that we might know and confess Him as Savior and Lord, like Peter! May this admission guide us into eternity with Him as well as shape our lives here.
