There we saw the giants…and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.
Numbers 13:33
God instructs Moses to send twelve leaders, drawn from respective Israelite tribes, to spy the promised land. Bring a report on the nature of the inhabitants, the land and its potential, and the military might of the Canaanites. Return with a souvenir – some fruits from Canaan. Off you go!
Forty days later and the men are back, bearing a very heavy cluster of grapes. There is palpable excitement among the Israelites. The preamble of the report is good. The body is equally impressive. The land is all that God promised. It flows with milk and honey.
Now to the challenges and risks. Ten of the spies cite the presence of giants within the land. The fortified cities will pose a serious threat to the Israelites. In fact, invading the land is a death-wish to the Israelites.
There is more, though. The spies appeared like grasshoppers before the Canaanites and before their own (spies) eyes. The report’s recommendation: It will be suicidal to step into that land. Joy turns into pandemonium for the people. They rebel. They prefer Egyptian slavery.
The report, though, has two dissenting signatures. Joshua and Caleb do not dispute the scary nature of the sons of Anak. However, their recommendation is different. Let’s invade the land. We can do it. We are not grasshoppers. On our side is the God who delivered us from Egypt. The One who parted the Red Sea.
Forty years later, the two heroes, not the ten ‘grasshoppers’, lead a new generation of Israelites into Canaan.
Do you have a grasshopper mentality? Do you talk more of your difficulties and less of the God who can overcome them? Do you exaggerate your problems while forgetting the Almighty God? Who get’s more airtime (or is it mouth time?) from you? The Devil or God?
Today, you have a choice: to be one of the 12 ‘grasshoppers’ and exalt Satan’s evil works or to be one of the two heroes and talk of the God who saves. Normalize expressing faith in God in the midst of your challenges.
Prayer
Father, God, increase my faith in you. Remind me to me exalt your saving power despite any current negative circumstances in my life.
Amen, and may we always learn to have faith in God,like the two heroes
Hallelujah, Dinah!
