“But what about you?” He asked. “Who do you say I am?”
Matthew 16:15 (NIV)
There is a difference between knowing about a person and knowing the person. If you meet someone in person and get to know him or her, you might either be disappointed or impressed depending on the image you had in mind.
One day, Jesus started an interesting conversation with His disciples, as recorded in Matthew 16:13-20. He asked them, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” (14).
This was an easy question. The disciples knew the prevailing public opinions about Christ. They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” (14).
We often find pleasure in discussing others, especially if we think they are wrong and we are right. I can imagine the disciples being very excited when responding to this question.
Then came the shocker; the real motive of Christ’s first question. Jesus asked one of the most important questions that every Christian must answer, “But what about you? Who do you say I am?” (15).
Many Christians waste a lot of time discussing others in contrast to themselves. We concentrate on how others dress and talk and who they interact with. How stable are their relationships and families? How much do they tithe and offer?
Jesus wants you to concentrate on yourself, not on others. He wants you to know Him, not just about Him. How strong and active is your relationship with Christ? He may be your Saviour, but is He your Lord, whom you obey? Who exactly, is Jesus to you? It’s not about others; it’s about you.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, please be my PERSONAL Lord and Saviour once again.
Have read this before even this week but have never thought of it this way. I love the insight.
Dun, that’s the beauty of scripture and the many impressions the Spirit of God gives us when we study the word.
