Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more?
Luke 7:42 (NKJV)
While Jesus is dining in Simon’s house, a prostitute begins to wash his feet with her tears. For a towel, she uses her hair. When the feet are dry, she breaks open a bottle of expensive, fragrant oil and anoints Christ’s feet. Simon is not happy and reasons that Jesus is likely not to be a prophet considering he has not realized the woman is a sinner.
Which of them Will Love Him More?
Jesus, while reading the thoughts of the Pharisee, tells the latter: “There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more?” (Luke 7:41-42).
Simon agrees that the more one is forgiven, the more he or she loves the person who forgives. In this case, the woman with loose morals loves God more than Simon because she is acutely aware of her baggage of sin. Simon, on the other hand, is a self-righteous man who believes his good works place him in better standing with God.
Who loves Jesus More?
Like the woman in this story, the more we realize our sinfulness and contrast it with God’s love and mercy, the more we will love God. Even when we have walked with Jesus for many years, we will still be amazed at how unworthy we are of His kindness. The best way to demonstrate how much we love Jesus is to obey Him. He says, “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” (John 14:15).
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for loving me unconditionally and for forgiving me, a vile sinner. Help me to love you back by obeying You.
