A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, Loving favor rather than silver and gold.
Proverbs 22:1 (NKJV)
When he introduced himself as Pastor Goliath, I was astonished. How in the world would a parent name her child Goliath? Thankfully, this Goliath turned out to be a warrior for God’s kingdom.
We name our children after Biblical characters, famous politicians, celebrities, relatives, events and experiences. We believe that the choice of a name can influence the child’s character and destiny.
A Good Name is Better than Great Riches
Now, while you had no control over the name on your birth certificate, you have the privilege of choosing a more important identity. According to King Solomon, “A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, Loving favor rather than silver and gold.” (Proverbs 22:1).
Solomon, one of the richest men ever, would have chosen a good reputation above riches. Loving favor has immensely greater value that all the money the world can offer. Indeed, a good name attracts prosperity.
Benefits of Acquiring a Good Name
Unlike the name that your parents or guardians gave you at birth, you grow your reputation as you interact with people. It is how you behave, speak and treat others. It is your social capital.
For example, when you work diligently and honestly, someone in a higher position is likely to notice and offer you a better opportunity. Similarly, when you demonstrate a Christ-like attitude and behaviour, you have a higher chance of winning souls for Jesus.
What can you do to acquire a good name or to improve the one you have currently?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me acquire a good name – the type of character that tells the world I am your child.
