The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
2 Peter 3:9 (NKJV)
One of the hardest virtues to cultivate and practice is patience. How do you react when someone you want to help is taking time to come to you? Do you wait for as long as it takes, or do you give up easily and live? After all, the intended beneficiary does not appear to care, and you are not the one who will lose.
The Lord is Not Slack
Such thoughts come to mind whenever I think about the second coming of Jesus. The apostle Peter appears to read my thoughts when He writes, “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9).
Peter asserts that Jesus would have closed the door of mercy a long time ago and returned to take His faithful home. However, He wants all of us to board the ark of salvation before He can close the door. Christ does not want any human being to perish, but to inherit eternal life.
Why Christ Has Not Yet Returned
Christ had not yet returned because His love compels Him to be patient with us. Unlike human beings, who are impatient and give up easily, Jesus still pleads with us to surrender our lives to Him before it is too late. Are you ready for Christ’s return? Who else do you need to convince to take advantage of this open door before it is shut?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for being patient with me. Work in me and prepare me for Your imminent return.
