Why Do You Seek Jesus?

Daily Devotional – Saturday, August 27
Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.
John 6:26 (NKJV)

Jesus had an evangelism approach worth emulating. He met the physical needs of the people then attended to their spiritual needs. He did not only preach; He healed and fed His followers. Nonetheless, some followers took advantage of the generosity of Christ.

On the night He fed the five thousand near Bethsaida, Jesus let the disciples take the only boat available to cross to Capernaum. Later that night, he walked on water, another miracle that shocked the disciples.

Because You Ate the Loaves and Were Filled

The following day, the same crowd that had eaten the loaves and fishes boarded boats and followed Jesus to Capernaum. These people inquired when Jesus had crossed the lake, seeing there was no boat available.

Jesus, though, read their thoughts and rebuked them, saying, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.” (John 6:26). Physical needs, not spiritual nourishment was their motive for following Jesus.

If Jesus were addressing us today, would He repeat this indictment? If Jesus failed to give us food, clothing, shelter, money, jobs, good health and so on, would we still worship God? Why do we seek Jesus?

Why Do We Seek Jesus?

Jesus counsels, “Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life…” (John 6:27). While it is important for us to meet our physical needs, we must get our priorities right.

Elsewhere in scripture, Jesus says, “…seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33). Let us not sacrifice eternal matters on the altar of temporal ones.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me to prioritize spiritual matters over temporal ones.

Faith is being Sure of what we hope for.And Certain of what we do not See.

Hebrews 11:1-6 Without Faith it is impossible to please God. Romans 14:2 One Man’s Faith allows him to eat everything, but another man, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables.
