Do You Have 24/7 Security?

Daily Devotional – Thursday, January 21, 2021

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)

We live in a world where security issues are very important. There have been numerous cases of terrorism in many countries all over the world. Not even developed nations have been spared. Everywhere you go, people have some degree of fear.

It is no wonder, then, that political leaders are under heavy protection. Chances are that your country’s President is guarded by menacing soldiers bearing the most sophisticated guns. His or her home and family are also guarded 24/7.

Private citizens are not left out either. They have hired security guards and bouncers. Even some Christian preachers contract these menacing individuals for bodily protection. Also, many homes and businesses have watchmen and guards from private companies.

However, according to the Bible, there is something else you need to guard more than anything else. Indeed, if there is any property that requires fully-armed guards 24/7, it is your mind (or heart, as some Bible versions put it).

According to the Bible, “everything you do flows from” your mind. Your mind determines your life, hence the need to guard it “above all else”. Your thoughts determine your words and actions. You are your thoughts (Proverbs 23:7).

Are you vigilantly watching what is entering your mind?  Do you vet the type of TV and radio content you consume? Do the books and magazines you read build or destroy your spiritual life? Are you proud of the social media content you consume?

How much money do you spend buying food and adorning your physical body? Compare that with your expenditure on food for the mind and soul. What quality of nutrients do you feed your mind with? Are you guarding your mind zealously to ensure the enemy does not poison it?

Remember, we are fighting a spiritual battle.  Like the Psalmist, your confession should be, “Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You.” (Psalm 119:11). Feed your mind with the Word of God. Be filled with the Holy Spirit. Walk in the light.

Prayer

Father, teach me how to choose the content I allow into my mind. With you, I know I will win the battle against sin, which is fought in my mind. Amen.
