Bill made furniture in a tiny workshop on the edge of town. He wouldn’t be hurried, even when customers demanded faster delivery. Every joint was snug, every surface carefully sanded, every piece inspected before it left his shop. Year after year families recommended him because his furniture was built to last, still sturdy and beautiful long after its purchase. His reputation eventually reached the owner of a newly built hotel, who entrusted him with furnishing every guest room: a deal that turned out to be lucrative. Years of quiet excellence accomplished what self-promotion never could.

Honouring God Through Skilful Work

Most people admire excellence, yet few see what produces it. Skill is not something we wake up with one morning. It grows through practice, patience, correction, and a willingness to keep learning. The successful person is the one who has decided to do ordinary things, day after day, long after the excitement has gone. Our key text tells us that God sees that kind of hard work. He cares not only about what we accomplish but also about the kind of people we become in the process.

The temptation is to settle for “good enough,” especially when nobody seems to notice. But there is a still higher motive for the Christian to seek excellence. We hone our craft because we serve people created in the image of God. A competent nurse calms patients. A good teacher shapes young minds. A good mechanic keeps families on the road safely. A skilled writer tells the truth clearly. Whatever your calling may be, every improvement you make is another way to love your neighbour well and honour the God who gave you the ability to serve.

This perspective changes the way we look at everyday responsibilities. We start to ask how well a job can be done, rather than how quickly it can be done. We do not resist correction but welcome it, for it helps us to grow. Instead of comparing ourselves to others, we concentrate on being faithful stewards of what God has entrusted to us. Excellence is not about perfection or impressing others. It is about giving our best to God, even when there is only Him as an audience.

Perhaps you have been praying for a bigger opportunity while overlooking the assignment already in your hands. Solomon offers a gentle reminder that doors often open after excellence has become a habit. Keep learning. Keep improving. Keep serving others with integrity and care. Trust God with the recognition, because that part is His. Your responsibility is to become more skilful. His responsibility is to decide where that skill will take you.

Heavenly Father, thank You for every ability You have entrusted to me. May I grow in skill with diligence and humility to serve others well and bring glory to Your name. Teach me to give You my best each day and trust You with the results.
