But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8 (NKJV)
Take a moment today to ponder the persecution and death of Jesus Christ. For three-and-a-half years, He had preached, healed and fed people. In every village, there was likely to be a person or people that Jesus had touched at a personal level.
Labouring for the Unappreciative
During His brief ministry, the number of paralytics, demoniacs, and deaf and blind people had reduced drastically. Societal outcasts were now living with their formerly estranged families. Some graves were empty because Jesus had resurrected their occupants.
Persons that had been enslaved by bad habits, negative traditions, racial and religious prejudices and inferiority were now free. Even foreigners recognized that this Rabbi was different, for He made Godliness attractive.
Sacrificing for the Unworthy
Indeed, Christ had accomplished His mission:
“The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.” (Luke 4:18-19).
Then the crucial moment came. The Jews accused Jesus of blasphemy, treason and other crimes. They dragged Him before Roman rulers. In a span of a few days, the crowds had transitioned from singing ‘Hosanna’ to shouting ‘Crucify him!’.
Repaying Good With Evil
Finally, they crucified Him naked on the cruel cross, with two thieves in tow, an indication of how lowly they regarded Him. As if that was not enough, The Roman soldiers and one of the thieves mocked the Saviour.
If you were Jesus, perhaps you would have aborted the mission. How ungrateful of the people He had come to save! Instead of appreciating what Jesus was doing for them and repenting, they persecuted and ridiculed Him.
While We Were Still Sinners
“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8). Who else could perform such a selfless act? Instead of abandoning us to die, He chose to lay down His life for us. That is the definition of agape!
This same Saviour continues to love us erring sinners. All He wants is for us to inherit eternal life. His arms remain wide open to receive repenting sinners like us. With Him, there is unconditional love and boundless mercies.
Why Jesus Died for Undeserving Sinners
Jesus died for underserving sinners because He loves them. Today, He invites you to lay your burdens of sin on Him. He pleads, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28). Will you heed Jesus’ voice and surrender your life to Him today?
Prayer
Thank You, Lord Jesus, for loving and dying for me, an underserving sinner. Forgive my sins and empower me to live for You.
