Why the Spiritual Operating System Must be Replaced

…do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
Romans 12:2 (NKJV)

My computer was frustratingly slow. It would also restart without prompting. I lost a lot of unsaved work, forcing me to redo numerous tasks. My frustration grew. I decided to call a technician.

It took a few tests for the expert to diagnose the problem. Computer viruses had eaten into my operating system. All my essential programs had been corrupted. It was too late to install a new antivirus software.

A Corrupted Mind

The solution was to format the machine and install a new operating system and other programs. Restoring my computer to optimal performance came at a high cost. By the time the process ended, though, the computer system was as good as new.

I find a similar scenario in the Epistles to the Romans. Like a computer with a corrupted operating system, sinners cannot produce good works, even with their best efforts. Apostle Paul laments, “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find.” (Romans 7:18).

Be Transformed by the Renewing of Your Mind

He adds, “For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin, which is in my members.” (Romans 7:22-23).

The only way to escape this quandary is to undergo a change in one’s operating system. Paul pleads with believers, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” (Romans 12:2).

Replacing the Spiritual Operating System

Only the indwelling Holy Spirit can renew our minds, removing the old carnal one and installing one that conforms to the will of God. Like a brand new operating system, the new mind will produce thoughts, actions and words that are good and acceptable.
