Why We Must Be Prudent

A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself, but the simple pass on and are punished.
Proverbs 22:3 (NKJV)

God wants us to live cautiously. Prudence is a virtue that is anchored firmly in our confidence in God and encompasses knowledge, discernment, and cautious decision-making in the journey of faith. We must always make decisions, thus it’s critical to understand why we must be prudent.

The Need for Caution

According to King Solomon, “A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself, but the simple pass on and are punished.” (Proverbs 22:3). As Christians, we are expected to have a similar outlook on life and to act, speak, and think wisely.

Being prudent is understanding the effects of our decisions and taking the necessary precautions to keep ourselves safe. God’s people need to use care and wisdom in the face of life’s obstacles, just as a prudent person would see the approaching storm and seek shelter until it passes.

Why We Must Be Prudent

Additionally, exercising prudence means yielding to God’s will. We give the Lord our intentions and goals as we strive to walk wisely, allowing Him to guide our actions. We understand that genuine wisdom originates with God, who gives us the discernment to handle the challenges of life with humility and grace.

Prudence is a light of hope in the midst of uncertainty and misfortune; it leads us to the secure harbor of God’s love and protection by guiding us through choppy waves. Thus, as we move forward in faith, let us be prudent and put our faith in God’s wisdom and provision.
