Why We Must Obey Authorities

Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.
Romans 13:1 (NKJV)

Our spiritual journey often teaches us that obedience to authority is not just a duty but also a path that leads to spiritual maturity and growth. We learn the virtues of humility and patience and realize that true freedom comes from submitting to God’s will and the authorities He has ordained.

All Authority is from God

The Apostle Paul reminds us, “Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.” (Romans 13:1).

Our submission to earthly rulers is an expression of our submission to God. Jesus, the epitome of obedience, yielded Himself up to the rule of His earthly parents, the religious establishment of His day, and, at the end of the day, the will of the Father, even to the point of death.

Why We Must Obey Authorities

Let us be lighthouses, illuminating the reality of God’s Word through our obedience in a world that frequently questions authority. Since God has put those in positions of leadership above us for a reason, let’s show our support and obedience to them.

We must also never forget that the King of Kings and Lord of Lords is the one to whom we owe devotion in the end. May we follow worldly authorities, knowing that Christ alone is our ultimate authority and that our actual citizenship is in heaven. Because God is the source of power, we must obey authority.
