The young lions lack and suffer hunger but those who seek the LORD shall not lack any good thing.
Psalms 34:10 (NKJV)
Whenever there is prolonged drought in the savannah, animals suffer. Browsers and grazers have little or no vegetation to feed on. They spend a lot of energy trekking to the few water sources. The longer the drought, the weaker the animals become.
The King of the Jungle Struggles
The lion is the king of the Jungle but drought and famine do not recognize that title. As the animals it feeds on become weaker and die from hunger, the emperor suffers. In fact, a few strong hyenas can take such a lion down with ease.
David was accustomed to lions, having worked as a herder and killed these beasts as he protected his herd. He must have come across lions in seasons of plenty and times of hunger. David understood the lion’s strengths and weaknesses.
The Young Lions Lack and Suffer Hunger
Therefore, he was accurate when he observed, “The young lions lack and suffer hunger but those who seek the LORD shall not lack any good thing.” (Psalms 34:10). Young lions symbolize power and majesty. Nothing is as scary as coming across coming across these beasts of prey.
Yet even in the natural strength and the extra impetus that hunger begets, young lions can go to bed hungry. They can run after weak prey and fail to make a kill. There is no guarantee that the mightiest animal will conquer the weak ones.
Why You are Better than the Strongest Lion
In contrast, those who trust in God have an assured access to heavenly resources. Even in their weakest situation, they can tap into the inexhaustible source of power. While the seemingly strong and wise people often fail, the supposedly weak but pious will never lack that which God can provide.
Today, if you feel inadequate and forsaken, remember you are better than the strongest lion. You will never lack any good thing as long as you seek God. Trust Him to give you what He defines as ‘good’, which sometimes is different from what you desire.
