Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!
Isaiah 43:18-19 (NKJV)
One door has closed, and another one has opened. A new year is here. Last year, I had joyous triumphs and devastating failures as well. I laughed and wept equally. What will the New Year bring my way?
I can choose to focus on the door that has closed or on the new one God has opened. Some of the pains and sorrows of yesterday are still fresh. I can go about lamenting and regretting my past and dealing with the guilt of unconfessed sin.
I can also direct my energy toward hating and wishing the worst for those who hurt me. I am justified because my persecutors have never apologized for the pain they caused me. Really? People will understand and sympathize with me if I go about complaining about my misfortune. True?
On second thought, how will concentrating on the closed door help me? Will my wounds heal? Will lost opportunities, money, departed loved ones, or broken relationships be restored through worry and mourning?
Forget the Former Things: I Am Doing a New Thing
For the New Year to have meaning, God has an important message for us. “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.” (Isaiah 43:18). The Almighty does not want us to focus on the negatives of the past year and carry them into the New Year.
Instead, God wants us to concentrate on the immeasurable and unfathomable blessings of the New Year. He says, “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” (Isaiah 43:19).
We must realize that what God has in store for us in the New Year is fresh, transformative, powerful, and beneficial. However, we should be careful not to miss our blessings when they spring up. This happens when we spend precious time mulling over our negative pasts.
A New Year of Miracles
The New Year will be full of miracles if we have faith in God. In the deserts of our lives, where there seems to be no way, God will make highways for us. He will create springs of life in the wilderness of our lives. We will experience blessings we never imagined were possible if we trust and obey God.
Hold firmly to the hand of “Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine.” (Ephesians 3:20). “Call to Him and He will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” Jeremiah 33:3
This New Year, may you have confidence in the God who promises:
“For I know the plans I have for you… plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11).
Happy New Year!
This New Year, you can trust God’s plans for you because He keeps His promises. Forget last year’s disappointments. Do not dwell on the past. See, God is doing a new thing in your life! Happy New Year full of God’s blessings!
Father, “every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from You, Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” (James 1:17). Thank You for the precious gift of this New Year.
