Why You Must Be Careful About Your Decisions

There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.
Proverbs 14:12 (NKJV)

In life, we must make decisions every day, some minor, some major. In our own eyes, a particular course of action may often appear right, reasonable, or even wise. It might feel right, be in line with the general consensus, or guarantee success. However, as our key text cautions, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.”

The Way That Seems Right

Being able to distinguish between God’s path and our own is often a challenge for believers. Self-reliance, ambition at whatever cost, and fleeting pleasures are only a few of the many roads that the world provides, but they can all ultimately result in spiritual emptiness and devastation.

To make sure we are headed in the correct direction, we start by giving our plans to God and putting all of our trust in Him. It is critical to acknowledge that we know very little about life and nothing about the future. God alone possesses omniscience. If we anchor our plans and actions entirely on our own wisdom, we risk walking on the path of destruction.

Why You Must Be Careful About Your Decisions

Rather than depending on our narrow ideas when making decisions, we must study God’s Word, pray to Him, and follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit before proceeding. Do you follow your own knowledge rather than seeking God’s guidance in any areas of your life? Today, ask Him to show you His way.

Heavenly Father, I don’t want to make plans and decisions that merely look correct but ultimately lead me astray. Teach me how to rely on You fully in everything I plan and do.
