Why You Must Strive to See God

Daily Devotional – Sunday, November 17, 2024
I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees You.
Job 42:5 (NKJV)

It is one thing to hear about a person, and an almost different experience to see him. Matters of faith are not different. Other people’s experiences can inspire us to develop faith in God, but we must gradually come to see God for ourselves.

By the Hearing of the Ear

As we read the book of Job, we sympathize with him as he suffers physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually. Unlike us who understand what Job is undergoing, he is oblivious to the battle between God and Satan, of which he is the battlefield.

However, throughout his suffering, he keeps dropping hints of his unshakeable confidence in God. For example, he states, “For I know that my Redeemer lives, and He shall stand at last on the earth.” (Job 19:25).

Why then does Job repent in chapter 42, verse 6? Apparently, he is realizing he has all along not understood God. Despite his famed fidelity to God, Job had not yet ‘known’ the Almighty.

Why You Must Strive to See God

That is why he says in verse 5, “I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees You.” After a period of suffering and soul-searching, Job does not just know about God. He knows God personally.

Faith needs to progress from being mere hearsay and mechanical obedience to a conscious and deliberate decision to live for Him. Have you advanced from just hearing about God to seeing and knowing Him? Immerse yourself in regular Bible study and diligent prayer, and you will begin to see God.

Prayer
Dear God, I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, but now I want my eye to see You.
