Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties.
Psalms 139:23 (NKJV)
Have you ever been in a situation where an item is lost and all people in the vicinity have to undergo a search? You might have heard someone say, “Search me. I have nothing to hide. I am not a thief.”
A person who volunteers for such scrutiny is usually confident of his or her innocence. The Bible, in contrast, envisions a situation where a person requests to be searched with the expectation that he or she will be corrected.
David requests God, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalms 139:23-24).
David submits himself to God’s searching eye. He, like the Prophet Jeremiah, knows that, “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9).
This implies that you cannot understand your own mind. It requires a higher infinite power to discover and expel hidden sin. We need to submit ourselves willingly to the One who says, “I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind.” (Jeremiah 17:10).
The only sure path to a pure heart, one that is in harmony with God, is to allow the Holy Spirit to reveal the wickedness in your heart, and to help you to overcome all forms of cherished sin.
Will you allow the Holy Spirit to search your mind, identify all sin, and lead you on the path to everlasting life?
Holy Spirit, I invite you into my heart to do the searching and cleansing work that only you can do.
Do you think it is necessary to ask God to search our hearts? What is your opinion on this devotional? Please leave a comment. Blessings.
