Daily Devotional – Tuesday. November 22, 2022
A man’s heart plans his way, but the LORD directs his steps.
Proverbs 16:9 (NKJV)
I arrived at the university early in the morning after traveling overnight. I had come to see my supervisor to discuss my research topics further. A fortnight before, he had instructed me to bring three prospective topics from which we would arrive at one.
A Man’s Heart Plans
To my disappointment, the supervisor declined each of my proposed topics. I had to start from scratch again without complaining because my supervisor had veto power over my project, according to university regulations.
On reflection, years later, I realized that God and human beings have a student-supervisor kind of relationship. According to King Solomon, “A man’s heart plans his way, but the LORD directs his steps.” (Proverbs 16:9).
The Lord Directs His Steps
God loves it when we plan. That is our work. We are rational human beings with the ability to make decisions. As fallible beings, though, we are prone to making errors in judgement. Consequently, God wants us to submit our plans to Him for approval.
How can we minimize the chances of our supervisor rejecting our proposals? By aligning ourselves with God’s will. When we invite the Holy Spirit into our hearts (Luke 11:13) and ask God for wisdom (James 1:5), we reduce our margin of error in making decisions.
Will God Approve Your Plans?
If we are to succeed in temporal and spiritual matters, we need to heed David’s counsel, “Commit your way to the LORD, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass.” (Psalms 37:5). Plan with God in mind and submit your plans to Him for approval, and you will succeed.

Almighty Father, I submit my plans to You, knowing well that You have the final word. Show me where I need to make changes to the glory of Your Name and to my prosperity.
