Now, therefore, let Me alone, that My wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them. And I will make of you a great nation.”
Exodus 32:10 (NKJV)
The children of Israel have defied God and committed arguably the worst sin by worshipping a golden calf. God, however, makes Moses an irresistible offer. He says, “Now therefore, let Me alone, that My wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them. And I will make of you a great nation.” (Exodus 32:10).
Forgive Them Or…
What is going on in the mind of Moses? Indeed, these people are rebellious and obstinate. They have brought me a lot of pain. What will I lose if God destroys them and creates another great nation through me? At least I can control my family and instruct them in a manner that will please God. I will take the offer.
Well, Moses rejects the offer! Instead, he pleads with God to forgive the wayward Israelites. At some point, Moses tells God, “Oh, these people have committed a great sin and have made for themselves a god of gold! Yet now, if You will forgive their sin—but if not, I pray, blot me out of Your book, which You have written.” (Exodus 32:31-32).
Would You Resist This Offer?
This is the true definition of selflessness in character and leadership. It is not easy to intercede for offenders, especially those who have caused you trouble personally. It is even harder to do so if God offers you a posh life and a future of bliss at their expense.
How selfless are you? Would you be willing to experience discomfort so that another person could be happy? Can you sacrifice that which you consider precious, especially when resources are few? How often do you plead with God on behalf of those who have hurt Him and you to some extent? Heed Paul’s counsel, “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind, let each esteem others better than himself.” (Philippians 2:3).
Prayer
Dear Jesus, help me to esteem others better than myself instead of practicing selfishness.
