Death and life are in the power of the tongue…
Proverbs 18:21 (NKJV)
In a court of law, the judge is the most powerful person. At the stroke of a pen and through a firm pronouncement, a magistrate decides the immediate or long-term future of the accused.
If the judge is not thorough in scrutinizing evidence, she might jail or condemn to death an innocent person. A keen magistrate might also realize an accused person is innocent and set him free.
You can conclude that the tongue of the judge has life and death in it. Have you realized everyone, including the high and mighty, fears judges? Now, did you know you have the same immense power as a judge?
That is what Solomon says in Proverbs 18:21, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue…” Proverbs 18:21. Yes, your tongue is very powerful. It can pronounce life or death on the life of another person.
How exactly is death in the power of our tongues? When we criticize unfairly, judge or condemn others, we indirectly kill them. Lying, gossiping, insulting, character assassination and discouraging those on the right path is a form of murder.
Now, how can you use your tongue to give life to others? When you motivate, encourage and inspire people who might be giving up, your tongue is an agent of life. Speaking the truth and sharing God’s word is similar to imparting life to the other person.
Like a judge, you must be very sure when you pronounce a sentence on another person. Having realized the immense power in your tongue, how will you use it differently from today?
Heavenly Father, may my tongue only minister life, and not death.
Your comments on this devotional will be of great importance to me and other readers. Be blessed.
A tongue is a small part of the body but very powerful.
It’s my prayer oh God that my tongue would always minister life in Jesus name. Amen
And may that be the prayer of each of us. God bless you, Pastor
God help me as young person to use my tongue to impact to other young people.
Amen, George. God has heard your prayer.
Indeed, ,the power of life and death lies in our tongues, may we be careful how we use them so that we wont lose a soul .
Some day, I will write on how the same verse applies to us, not to others. God bless you, Brian.
