You are the salt of the earth…
Matthew 5:13 (NKJV)
I am currently under a strict diet regime to treat an illness that has plagued me for weeks. Among the requirement is that I stop taking salt in the meantime. This is torture! I feel like I am eating soil!
For lack of salt, I eat scantily. I fear looking into the mirror while eating because I know the look on my face may scare me. Never have I thought salt is so critical for my taste buds. I look forward to the end of the two-week treatment.
You are the Salt of the Earth
As I reflect on my temporary misfortune, the words of Jesus come to mind. “You are the salt of the earth…” Now I know why the Lord likened Christians to salt. Apart from preserving godliness in the world, we flavor it.
Jesus wants us to mix with the world and influence it, instead of vice versa. He wants the world to be a better and more enjoyable place thanks to the sweetening influence of Christians.
Salt-less Christianity
Our absence or ineffectiveness have serious ramifications for other human being. Without our optimistic joy, the world is poorer. We owe society our infectious peace and calmness. If we do not extend generosity and helping hand to the needy, the earth becomes tasteless.
I wonder whether those I interact me find me unpalatable like my salt-less food. Do they feel like getting rid of me? Is it possible they wonder when I will leave their presence? Have I failed to be the salt of the earth Jesus wants me to be?
Can the people you live and interact with attest you are the sweetening and preserving salt in their lives?
Prayer
Jesus, all I ask today is for You to, once again, make me the salt in my society.
In what practical ways can we be the salt of the earth? Please leave a comment,
