But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.
Acts 1:8 (NKJV)
When a witness takes the stand in a court of law, and swears to tell ‘the truth and nothing but the truth’, every ear in the court listens. People expect to get a first-hand account of critical events in the case.
Similarly, genuine Christian witnessing is not hearsay but a proclamation of a personal experience with Jesus.
You Shall Be Witnesses to Me
The last words Jesus spoke to His disciples before ascending to heaven were about witnessing.
“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8).
Christ promised them the outpouring of the Holy Spirt, which would empower them to be His witnesses. They were to proclaim the Good News because they had experienced Jesus and salvation.
That Which We Have Heard and Seen
One of these witnesses was Apostle John. Here is his first-hand account:
“That … which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life.” (1 John 1:1).
Modern Christians have never seen Jesus in the flesh but through the indwelling Holy Spirit, we can experience Him. We hear and see Christ in prayer and Bible study. We have touched Him though character transformation, healing, miraculous salvation from accidents and death, financial miracles and so on.
What is Your Witnessing Story?
We are His witnesses. We should not keep quiet. Like the first disciples, ours are first-hand encounters with Jesus. What is your witnessing story? Do people in your locality know you are Christ’s witness? Tell you story because it might win a soul to Jesus.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, teach me how to witness genuinely for You that others may know You through me.
Amen.. witnessing is an obligation to every christian. This may not happen through speaking but also in one sense our lives always witnessing either for christ or against Christ.
May God help me be a faithful witness.
Amen, Doc.
