So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth. It shall not return to Me void,
But it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.
Isaiah 55:11 (NKJV)
A relic of my childhood that I hold dear is watching the rain falling after a drought. The fragrance from the soil as it quenches its parched throat is highly satisfying to my nostrils. In this phenomenon, I envision God transforming the earth by breathing life into it.
How Rain Transforms Life
In subsequent days, the brownish earth gradually turns green. Seeds that were days before hiding under dust sprout with vigour. Trees that had previously shed their leaves begin putting on a beautiful green canopy.
Man and animal join in the joy of the returning rain. There is abundant food for the beasts and fowls. A flurry of activities ensues in the farms, caves, burrows, dens and nests. Farmers sow seed joyfully, looking forward to an abundant harvest. The rain has done its miracle and every creature of God rejoices in this precious gift.
My Word Shall Not Return Void
This scenario greets us in this profound passage:
“For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, and do not return there but water the earth and make it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth. It shall not return to Me void but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:10-11).
Vitality in God’s Word
Rain is God’s agent for rejuvenation and rebirth. Never will it fall and fail to transform the earth. It leaves happy creatures in its wake. Even in the desert where no one farms, showers are a blessing and their effects are almost instantaneous and miraculous.
In this passage, God introduces another kind of rain – His word. When God releases His blessings upon us, they transform our lives. Often, we appreciate God’s blessings after a prolonged duration of lack or separation from Him but as soon as God decrees a blessing upon us, the effects are manifest for all to see.
Harness the Transforming Power in the Word of God
Similarly, when we accept the gospel wholeheartedly, a process of attitude and character transformation begins. We cannot be recipients of God’s grace and remain the same. The word of God will accomplish in penitent human beings that which He has directed it to do.
Notice, though, natural and spiritual growth are processes not events. The plant must partake of the water, sunshine and nutrients that God provides for it to reach maturity. Similarly, we must harness the transforming power of the word of God by spending time reading and meditating on it while practicing its teachings.
