Trust and Obedience Lessons from Migratory Birds

Daily Devotional – Monday, July 10, 2023
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go. I will guide you with My eye.
Psalms 32:8 (NKJV)

Because migratory birds subscribe to an authority higher than human beings do, they defy national borders and travel as far as 16,000 miles to their appointed destinations. Without passports and visas, they accelerate to speeds of up to 30mph and travel for over eight hours a day, usually at night.

Birds of Passage their Appointed Times

Moreover, without a compass, these birds follow a definite path to reach their exact destinations. Later in the same year, and without prompting, the follow the same exact route back to their original destinations. In addition, roving birds prepare for relocation by bulking on body fat, which will act as fuel during the long journey.

Now, God, the Creator and Guide of migratory birds, invites us to learn from these fowls by stating, “Even the stork in the heavens knows her appointed times, and the turtledove, the swift, and the swallow observe the time of their coming, but My people do not know the judgment of the LORD.” (Jeremiah 8:7).

Learning from Migrant Birds

In other words, if we learned to trust in God ad follow His instructions unquestioningly, our lives would be as carefree as those of migratory birds. We would climb to temporal and spiritual heights that seem impossible today.

Our current achievements would fade compared to the distance of success we would cover if we aligned ourselves with God’s moral and physical laws. We would set goals and achieve them with precision if we allowed God to control our lives as He does with birds. Nothing would be impossible for us.

Trust and Obedience Lessons from Migratory Birds

To those who surrender their lives and plans to God and obey His voice, God promises, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go. I will guide you with My eye.” (Psalms 32:8). For the true believer, life is not a series of trial-and-error attempts but God-inspired, well-calculated steps that lead to an assured destination, be it material or spiritual.

What prevents you from applying these trust and obedience lessons from migratory birds in your life today? Do you trust God fully? Give God complete charge over your life and allow Him to instruct, teach and guide you, and you will be amazed at how successful you will become.
